The best part?

You can cook a variety of foods in them – chicken wings, fries, meat cutlets, desserts – you name it.

But how do you find the air fryer that’s right for you?

Well, I’m here to help! After extensive research, I’ve put together this list of top rated air fryers on the market.

To give you a quick summary:

The best air fryer to buy right now is Philips Avance XXL Twin Turbostar. It delivers the best results in terms of cooking food evenly, works virtually oil-free, has multiple cooking functions like baking, grilling, etc., AND is super easy to clean!

How to find the best air fryer?

But first,

Before we take a look at the products, I’ll quickly cover the most important things you should consider when choosing an air fryer. This small air fryer buying guide will make it easier to find the one that’s right for you.

Here are six things to pay attention to when shopping for an air fryer:

Capacity – The capacity is perhaps the most important thing to consider! How big of an air fryer you need to buy depends on the size of your family. Larger units can easily hold a minimum of 4-5 quarts of food, which is enough for a family of four (with extra servings). Small air fryers are usually enough for 1 or 2 people.

Cooking timer – The maximum length of the timer directly affects what meals you can prepare in your air fryer. Most units come with a 30-minute timer, which is enough for lighter recipes like cooking snacks, fries, or nuggets. If you want to prepare bigger and heavier meals like pork chops or thick meat cuts, you’ll need a model with at least 60 minutes of cooking time.

Cooking modes – Some air fryers come with automatic cooking modes that set the timer and temperature based on what you’re cooking. That’s super convenient and ensures more even cooking results! Premium units also offer different food processing options like steaming, baking, dehydrating, etc.

Power – High-powered models have a longer cooking time and are capable of more heat output, meaning you can cook bigger and more complicated meals. Low power units can usually only handle light recipes. So, my recommendation is to go for an air fryer with around 1500 watts of power.

Size – Don’t forget to check the dimensions of the unit you want to buy, especially when your counter space is limited!

Warranty – Finally, make sure the length of the warranty for your chosen product is at least 1 year.

In my research, I came across lots of seemingly good air fryers, but they all ended up either breaking after only a few months’ use, having issues with the non-stick coating peeling, or they just didn’t deliver the results you would expect from an air fryer.

So, I decided to go with products from a brand I know well – Philips.

Philips has been manufacturing high-quality kitchenware for years, and it’s one of the few brands I still trust. For this reason, all three of my top air fryer picks for 2020 are from this company.

Let’s take a look at the air fryer reviews!

#1 – Philips Avance XXL Twin TurboStar (HD9630/98) – Best Large Air Fryer

The best air fryer for 2020 is Philips’ Twin TurboStar. I love this air fryer because:

  • It has a large capacity, which makes it suitable for large families or when you’re entertaining guests.
  • It’s super easy to use as it comes with just two dials – one for time, one for temperature.  No more fussing with dials!
  • It cooks food evenly and extremely fast.
  • You don’t need any oil to use it.

Capacity & Tech

The XXL Avance has a large food basket with a capacity of 4 qt. (3 pounds). It fits around two bags of frozen French fries or a medium-sized chicken (up to 6 portions), so it’s the perfect family size!

It uses hot air for cooking, and you don’t need to worry about your food drying out. What’s more, it works without any oil (see more below)! That, for me, makes it deserving its #1 spot on this list!

Specs:

  • 1725 W motor
  • 1-year warranty
  • 60-minute timer
  • Temperature ranging from 175-400 degrees
  • Analog dials

Cooking Modes/Functions

Because this is an older model, it doesn’t come with any preset cooking modes. That said, it is super easy to use:

  • Determine the temperature you need to cook your food at.
  • Find out how long you need to cook it for.
  • Turn the dials, and you’re good to go!

Although the lack of preset cooking modes could be considered a con, I’ve still chosen this model as the best air fryer for 2020. After all, you can use it for different cooking functions like baking, grilling, roasting, and frying.

Does it cook food evenly?

Another reason why the Avance XXL is the best air fryer in my opinion is because it ensures even and crisp cooking for all kinds of foods.

How?

First, Philips’ TurboStar technology causes the hot air to swirl all around the cooking basket resulting in even air frying.

Secondly, the basket is just large enough to allow the food to be evenly spread out. Simple as that!

How long does it take?

The HD9630/98 is one of the fastest air fryers today:

You don’t need to preheat it, and it only takes about 7-10 minutes to cook a bag of fries and about 15-20 minutes to cook a full chicken.

Of course, this is just an average, as the real cooking time depends on how much food you want to cook and the temperature you set, but you get the idea.

Oil Use

The Avance is one of the healthiest frying alternatives to deep-frying as you can reduce your oil consumption by up to 90%. You only need a drop of oil, or you can cook with no oil at all (especially if you’re preparing juicy meats).

Another unique thing about this unit is its oil extraction system that actually removes excess oils and fats that get squeezed out during the cooking process!

The Good

  • Large food basket
  • Even cooking
  • Works fast
  • Can be used with no oil at all
  • Decreases the fat content of foods by extracting fats from the cooking process
  • Has multiple cooking functions like grilling, baking, and more

The Bad

  • No preset cooking modes
  • Doesn’t have a digital display
  • Premium price-tag.

Summary

Philips’ Avance Twin TurboStar model offers fantastic value for money. It is compact in size, although it can easily fit food for a family of four, it’s super easy to use (and clean), plus it’s one of the healthiest units available today. And most importantly – it ensures even and crisp cooking!

#2 – Philips Avance Digital TurboStar (HD9641/96) – Best Compact Air Fryer

The HD9641/96 is one of Philips’ highest-rated models and a great alternative to my top pick Avance XXL. It’s the right choice for you if ease-of-use and convenience are your top priorities.

It’s on my list because it has a couple of unique features that I love (and other Philips’ models don’t come with):

  • 4 preset cooking modes
  • A ‘Keep Warm’ function

Capacity & Tech

The HD9641/96 has a capacity of 2.75 qt. (1.8 lbs.) per round, which is about one pack of French fries. Although that makes around 4 servings, you may have to cook a couple of rounds to feed a large family.

It uses the same hot air TurboStar technology that ensures a crispy exterior and a juicy interior.

Specs:

  • 1425 W motor
  • 1-year warranty
  • 60-minute timer
  • Temperature ranging from 180-390 degrees
  • Digital display

Cooking Modes/Functions

I love the HD9641/96 model because it comes with five preset cooking modes:

  • Fish
  • Meat
  • Fries
  • Chicken drumsticks
  • The ‘Keep Warm’ function

It’s perfect for some who doesn’t want to bother with finding the right recipes:

Just fill the basket with your raw food, choose the right cooking mode, and you’re good to go!

On top of air frying, the Digital TurboStar also has modes for:

  • Baking
  • Roasting
  • Grilling

The unique ‘Keep Warm’ function keeps your food warm and crispy for up to 30 minutes.

Does it cook food evenly?

Now,

The main reason why the Digital TurboStar is not my #1 pick is that sometimes it just doesn’t cook food evenly.

This is only a problem if you fill the basket over the recommended limit, but still, it can be an annoying issue to deal with.

Fortunately, there is a smart trick to solve this problem:

All you need to do is take out the basket mid-cooking and shake it to redistribute the contents.

How long does it take?

Like the Twin TurboStar reviewed above, the Digital unit doesn’t need any preheating. It heats up really fast and can have your French fries cooked in about 10 minutes. Though slower than the XXL model, it’s still pretty fast compared to other air fryers out there!

Oil use

You only need about a teaspoon of oil for one batch of food, which is up to 75% less fat compared to deep or pan-frying. That’s pretty impressive, although if you’re counting your calories, remember that the Avance model reduces fat usage by up to 90%.

The Good

  • Simple digital display
  • Compact in size
  • 4 preset modes + the ‘Keep Warm’ function
  • 1 teaspoon of oil is all it needs
  • Multiple cooking functions such as roasting and grilling cooking process

The Bad

  • Smaller capacity
  • Takes longer to prepare foods
  • May not cook foods evenly if the basket is overcrowded

Summary

The HD9641/96 Digital TurboStar air fryer is the right model for you if you’re looking for something that doesn’t take a lot of effort to use. It comes with a simple, user-friendly interface, multiple preset cooking modes making food preparing a breeze, and you can’t underestimate the value of the ‘Keep Warm’ function.

#3 – Philips Viva TurboStar 9 (HD9621/99) – Best Budget Air Fryer

The Viva TurboStar is right for you if you’re looking for something basic and more affordable.

Using the same unique TurboStar hot air technology as the Avance XXL and the Digital TurboStar reviewed above, it delivers amazingly crispy and juicy fried foods when used right.

The Viva comes in a smaller, more compact package, making it suitable for crowded countertops.

Capacity & Tech

The Viva TurboStar holds about the same amount of food as the #2 pick – 2.75 qt. (1.8. lbs.), fitting half a chicken or a pack of frozen fries.

It’s perfect for preparing smaller meals or cooking for a smaller family as you get about 4 full portions out of it.

Specs:

  • 1425 W motor
  • 1-year warranty
  • 30-minute timer
  • Heating up to 390 degrees
  • Analog interface

Like the two units reviewed above, the Viva model also uses the TurboStar rapid air technology to cook your food.

Cooking Modes/Functions

There are no preset cooking modes, but it does have a wide range of temperatures (calibrated with 30-minute intervals) you can use for frying, roasting, grilling, or baking.

I love that the top of the unit displays the recommended time and temperature information for different foods. You can also use the handy Philips Air Fryer App with over 200 recipe instructions.

Does it cook food evenly?

The problem with small air fryers is that the cooking basket is too small, leaving food unevenly cooked if overcrowded.

You can have the same issue with the Viva model, so make sure to use the remove-and-shake trick mentioned above:

Remove the food basket about halfway through, shake thoroughly to redistribute the contents, pop it back, and wait for the timer to run out!

How long does it take?

The cooking time is a bit longer than with the XXL model, but you still get crispy fries in about 10 minutes, snacks like frozen onion rings in 5-7 minutes, and chicken drumsticks or pork chops in 15-20 minutes.

Oil use

For best results, the HD9621/99 requires about one tablespoon of oil per one round of food. The oil ensures a golden and crispy exterior that makes fried foods so delicious. Though it’s more than what the other two Philips’ air fryers use, it’s still much less compared to other similar products.

The Good

  • Good price
  • Cooks with up to 1 tablespoon of oil
  • Compact in size
  • Has different cooking functions like baking and grilling

The Bad

  • Suitable for smaller families only
  • No preset cooking modes
  • Can cook foods unevenly if you overfill the basket

Summary

The HD9621/99 is a good choice if you need a small and compact air fryer that doesn’t break the bank. It uses the same superior hot air technology, cooks foods evenly if you don’t overcrowd the basket, and the best part – requires about 75% less oil than other similar products.

Frequently Asked Questions

⭐ What size air fryer do I need for a family of 4?

To be on the safe side, go with an air fryer with a capacity of 4-5 quarts. A unit this size will fit a whole chicken or 4-5 chicken breasts/pork chops, or two packs of frozen French fries/frozen veggies.

⭐ How to preheat an air fryer?

Most air fryers don’t actually need to be preheated, but some chefs recommend to do so anyway. According to them, preheating the fryer will help set the airflow and temperature at the right levels for all-around, even cooking.
To preheat your air fryer, set the temperature to about 325-400 degrees and let it warm up for about 7 minutes.

⭐ How to clean an air fryer?

Most high-quality air fryers come with removable parts that are dishwasher safe. However, to preserve the non-stick coating, I recommend only cleaning them with hot water/dishwashing soap or with a damp cloth.
1. Unplug the air fryer and make sure it has completely cooled down.
2. Clean the outside with a damp cloth.
3. Clean the basket under running water using a soft sponge and dishwashing liquid.
4. DO NOT use scrubby sponges as they will damage the coating.
Use a toothpick or a soft toothbrush to get to areas you can’t easily reach by hand.

Wrapping It Up

To ensure you get a high-quality product that lasts a good while, make sure to go with a reputable brand. I’ve chosen Philips’ TurboStar air fryers as my top picks, but other good brands also include Ninja, GoWise, and NuWave.

Whichever unit you choose to go with, I hope my reviews helped make your choice a little bit easier.
